Teach students all about author's claim with this fun activity. Students will learn about how to support an author's claim with evidence. Introduce them to Claim the Giraffe. This activity is divided up into 4 different sections. See below for specific directions for each section:

Anchor Chart: Display the anchor chart for students to see. Explain to students that we can think of an author’s claim as the body of a giraffe. The claim is the author’s main point. In order to support the giraffe, we need to find evidence. We can put each piece of evidence as each leg to hold up Claim the Giraffe.

Modeling: Use the modeling sheet to demonstrate for students how to find the authors claim and supporting evidence.

Guided Practice: Have students use the guided practice sheet to work with a partner or small group to find the author’s claim and supporting evidence. Students will write the claim in the body of Claim the Giraffe and draw legs and write the evidence in each leg to support Claim.

Independent Practice: Students will read the article and identify the claim. Next, they will add legs to Claim by drawing a leg and writing in evidence to support each leg. Refer to the key for the correct answers.
